Site Considerations

Factors to consider in selecting the perfect site for your Hawaii wedding or vow renewal:

  • Distance & drive time from where you are staying.
  • Heavy traffic periods – morning & evening commute; it’s always heavier than you think!
  • How you will get there & back (GPS is not always reliable in Hawaii).
  • Careful of Hawaiian names; spelling & pronunciation can be confusing.
  • Site features, parking & site space for guests.
  • Facilities, ease of access & whether shelter is available.
  • Travel Fees apply to each staff provider, if applicable.
  • Beach or park permit fees, if applicable & as indicated.
  • Weather, wind, tides & lighting at your desired time of day.
  • Month of the year, seasonal changes & whether a view of sunset is expected.
  • The sun sets in the West! Click this link to see sunset/sunrise times.
  • Crowded locations on weekends & holidays (see State Holiday link under Step 1).
  • Site conditions subject to have changed since photos/video shown were recorded.
  • Please note: Outside providers of services we offer are NOT PERMITTED at any site without prior approval. A fee may apply.

Directions to Health Department

DIRECTIONS TO MARRIAGE LICENSE BUREAU

State of Hawaii Department of Health on Oahu

From Waikiki by The Bus:

Go to Kuhio Street in Waikiki to catch The Bus towards downtown Honolulu (Westbound).  The driver will assist you in choosing the right bus and exiting at the Punchbowl Street stop.  The Health Department building faces the intersection with Beretania Street.  You will see the large square State Capitol Building on the left as you approach the bus stop. The Health Department building will be in front of you when you disembark. Look for sign over the doors: Kinau Hale. Cost is $2.75 cash per adult, $1 seniors 65+, each way; no change given. An adult one-day pass is available for $5.50, $2 seniors 65+. The bus stop to return to Waikiki is one long block away towards the ocean on the corner of King Street (one-way Eastbound) & Punchbowl Street, on the ocean side of the State Capitol Building & Iolani Palace. See The Bus website here.

From Waikiki by car:

Drive toward the mountain (we say, “mauka”) on any cross street to Ala Wai Blvd; it is one way to the left along side a canal (Ewa direction, i.e. towards downtown). Stay in the center lane until you pass McCully Street (the first bridge over the canal). The right two lanes turn onto Kalakaua Avenue (the second bridge over the canal), and continue toward the mountain. Kalakaua Avenue merges into Beretania Street; it is one way to the left. Go left. Continue toward town, staying in the right lane, until you pass the Honolulu Police Station on your left. The Health Department is across the street from the East lawn of the State Capitol Building, at the corner of Punchbowl Street and Beretania Street (it is a 4-story building called “Hale Kinau” at 1250 Punchbowl Street). The entry to the Parking lot is on Punchbowl Street so get in the right lane early to turn right on Punchbowl Street. Go past the building (there’s no left turn into the lot) to the break in the median, turn left. A 4-story building with green windows will be on your right. At the Governor’s Mansion, go left around the circle, then back to Punchbowl St., turn right at the stop sign, then right into the Health Dept. lot. The entry is marked with yellow poles. The building is also marked “State of Hawaii Health Department” on its street side. See map below.

From the Honolulu International Airport by car:

Take H-1 freeway Eastbound to Punchbowl Street (exit 21B). Stay in the right lane onto Punchbowl Street. After the traffic light at Vineyard St. continue past Queen’s Hospital Emergency (on your left). Look for the building on your right marked “State of Hawaii Health Department”. It is angled to the corner. Turn right into the Health Dept. parking lot; the entry is marked with yellow poles. See photo & map below. TIP: You cannot make a left turn into the Health Dept. from Punchbowl Street going toward the mountains. Just continue in the left lane on Punchbowl and turn left just past the pedestrian crossing. This takes you behind & into the Capitol underground. By the gate to the Governor’s Mansion, there is a circle where you can turn back to Punchbowl Street. Turn right at the stop sign, so you are going back toward the ocean. The Health Department will now be on your right across from The Medical Library.

Drive safe and buckle up; it’s the law in Hawaii.

Hints and Tips

Tips on Getting Married in Hawaii

Things to remember when planing to get married in Hawaii

  1. Holidays, Traffic & Busy Dates: The Honolulu Marriage License Office is open only during normal business hours, but not on the usual 13-14 State holidays. With a population of over 900,000 and more than 800,000 vehicles registered on Oahu, traffic & parking can be quite a challenge. Plan to get going early, check out your site before your scheduled day and make sure you keep to our schedule to avoid overtime fees or conflict with other events for which the minister & other performers may be obligated. Keep holidays in mind when choosing your Hawaii wedding date. Sunset times are especially popular. Valentine’s Day is a hugely popular date for weddings in Hawaii and while it might seem romantic, you may change your mind if you have to wait in line for a minister. New Year’s Eve is another busy wedding day in Hawaii. It’s also party central for tourists, which means your out-of-town wedding guests may have trouble finding a flight or a hotel room unless you book well in advance. Keep in mind that reception sites may also be booked solid during these holidays. Weekends at popular parks can cause parking delays of more than 45-60 minutes, so beware! Get there early or let us get you there in a luxurious limousine and avoid the parking problems & driving in traffic.
  2. Weather: Hawaii has beautiful, sunny weather most of the year. However, even though the summer months are popular for weddings, the weather here can be hot and humid so may be uncomfortable if you’re dressed in a tuxedo or a long, heavy gown. The sun can melt everything from the bride’s makeup to the icing on the wedding cake. Hawaii temperatures rarely top the 90-degree mark. Temperatures are pleasant at night, so you might want to think about a shady site or a late afternoon ceremony during the summer. During Spring & Fall, rain may be more common, but showers are usually brief and centered over the mountains and windward sections. Most beaches are exposed with no shelter from wind or rain. We provide umbrellas if needed. Windward beaches tend to be windier. We get lots of rainbows so maybe you’ll be lucky to have one on your day! Check the weather for current conditions in Honolulu, but don’t believe everything you see or hear.
  3. Sunsets on Oahu: As the sun makes its journey North of West in the winter & South of West in the summer (due to Earth’s tilt), the view of sunset at any particular beach changes daily. As viewed from shore, the sun sets a little farther to the right every day until the end of June, then a little farther to the left every day until end of December. Most beaches in Areas 4 & 5 (closest to Waikiki) face South so the sun will go down in the summer to the right as you face the ocean. This means that the winter months offer the best opportunity to view the sun setting over water from some of these beaches, not all. During the summer, you’ll need to be on a beach facing West (1 site in Area 4, Areas 6 & 7) to be sure to see the sun setting over water. We also can do services at sunrise (Areas 1, 2, 3 & 1 site in Area 4) Want to do your own calculations? Click to see this calculator.
  4. The Dress: Since Hawaii has no waiting period for getting married and spur-of-the-moment weddings, especially Vow Renewals, are a common occurrence. So, where can you find appropriate wedding attire with only a couple of hours notice? Many couples simply purchase a beautiful aloha print shirt and dress couples (matching?) or simply come dressed in your bikini top and sarong.
  5. Legal: Even though Honolulu is known for quickie marriages, that doesn’t mean you can just waltz in off the street into a chapel and get married. There are legal requirements you must meet before being issued a marriage license. Check out our section on the legalities of getting married in Hawaii above. Rumors that Hawaii Beach Weddings are not legal in Hawaii are wholly false, however a permit from the State of Hawaii may be required if you want to get married in the sand near the water’s edge (“shoreline”). For other legal questions, check with the State Health Dept. We also perform legal Civil Unions and Same-Sex marriages and very meaningful romantic services as may be wanted. For those couples who got married by a judge and did not get a real ceremony, we also do Symbolic Marriage ceremonies that resemble legal marriage. A license for this is not required. Marriages in Hawaii are generally accepted in most nations of the world. Check your local office for legalities regarding marriage in the United States. An Apostille is available with your copy of the license from the State for $1 if needed by your country’s government.
  6. Witnesses: If you’re one of those couples who decide on a last minute wedding, you might not have any guests in town, which brings up the question of having a witness at your ceremony. Not to worry — Hawaii does not require witnesses. That said, since most couples hire our professional photographer to shoot the ceremony, he will serve as a witness for your happy occasion at no extra charge.
  7. Time: If you have your Hawaii Beach Wedding on one of the many pristine beaches around Oahu, don’t expect a long ceremony or a lot of quality time afterwards. Many beaches are crowded with people and it may be difficult to find a really “secluded” beach. You’ll probably opt to get back into the limousine and cruise the coast, or drive to another site for your reception. The most popular time of day for weddings is sunset, so be well advised to book early to secure a minister and site for sunset, which only occurs once per day in Hawaii and is not fully visible from every beach. Ask for recommendations according to your expectations. Check our link in #3 above to the sunset chart and remember the sun goes down in the West!
  8. The Wedding Performer: State of Hawaii has two categories of “Type of Ceremony”: Religious and Civil. Judges perform civil wedding ceremonies, Ministers (and licensed Officiates) perform religious wedding ceremonies. If you aren’t into religion, that’s fine. We do a non-denominational service. Keep in mind that prices vary widely among ministers on Oahu. Our prices are among the best! We normally perform a beautiful, romantic & simple non-denominational service. Christian services are also available on request. See testimonials link at the top of the page for comments received from some of our couples.
  9. Unusual Weddings: When you come to Honolulu to get married, you don’t have to have a traditional ceremony in a chapel. Why not make it a wild and crazy experience? Our ministers offer custom services that cater to your special needs. You can get married in a rain forest under a waterfall, or on a hilltop overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean.
  10. Hair and Makeup: If you’re from out of town and you’re in Honolulu for your Hawaii Beach Wedding, you will probably want to find a hairstylist to help you prepare for the big day. Many hotels have salons or spas right on property. You may also want to try a local salon in Waikiki. In either case, be sure to book your appointment well in advance and keep those holidays and weekends in mind. The salons can get booked up fast. There are also some services in town that will come directly to your hotel room to do your hair and makeup for your wedding. On windy days, especially on windward beaches, you may find your hair blowing all over the place, so consider style accordingly. Also, consider ordering a haku lei that fits on the crown of your head and will serve to keep hair out of your eyes. It can be worn by both men & women.
  11. Collection of Fees: Our ministers handle collections (whenever fees are due to be paid) after the ceremony. They do not accept checks or make change on-site. We prefer payment in cash to minimize the fees we pay for online processing. For an extra charge, Rev. Kermit may be able to accept credit cards on-site. Keep this in mind.
  12. Gratuities: Our business is a service business. We aim to please you, not stick you with unjust charges or deposit fees. We work hard to deliver the best possible services for the lowest cost, so profit margins are kept to a bare minimum. Our price list does not include State tax (rounded to 5%) or gratuities. If you are pleased with our services, gratuities are always appreciated and traditionally reward good service according to merit, always at the full discretion of you, our valued customer. Thank you in advance!
  13. Remember to Bring Everything: As you gather your things to go to your wedding site, remember to bring your Hawaii Marriage License Worksheet, Rings and Cash.
  14. Change Your Mind? If after the ceremony you have second thoughts about being married and request us to destroy the certificate or not file it, we will refuse. Once the vows are said and accepted, you are married under the law. Get an attorney or request information from Family Court.
  15. Please note: Outside providers of services we offer are NOT PERMITTED.
